During spring I went on a small get-away to Amsterdam with my mom and the trip definitely deserves to be shared. In my opinion Amsterdam is ideal for a weekend break. I have visited Amsterdam one time before with my good friend Maria and we also agreed that the city was perfect for a girls only trip.
I was a little late regarding the hotel booking, so it was a little difficult to find a nice place with a central location for a reasonable price, but then House of Freddy turned up. It was totally new and had no recommendations on Tripadvisor, but the location was good and it turned out to be a good choice. It was more a guesthouse than a hotel. The room was small room, but nice and clean. There was no possibility for breakfast, but we had a Nespresso machine in the room. Moreover you do not need breakfast at the hotel because La Place is just so delicious. Kind of a large food hall with a lot of nice stuff; bread & cakes, fruit, smoothies – you name it. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, breakfast or coffee & cake.
We were lucky with the weather, the sun was shining and we were strolling around, went shopping, had chilled white wine on some of the cute cafés and amazing food. Even though it is a touristy square I think Rembrandtplein has a nice atmosphere and we also ended up at a few times. It’s good for people watching and a quick bite in the sun during daytime, but also very nice inside during the evening. And the prices are good too – a nice glas of wine to only 3€. Moreover it is placed just next to the big clubs; Escape and De Krone.
We had agreed that we could pick one restaurant each. My mom chose The Seafood Bar. I was really happy about her choice. My love to fish and seafood might come from her:-) We ordered two different platters, one with cold seafood and one with grilled seafood. I think we overestimated our hunger, but it surely was delicious. The atmosphere also made it perfect for a friday night out.
A little further down the street from the Seafood Bar you find Conservatorium Hotel, which looked so so nice. It should be very popular on saturdays, but our waiter recommended us to go to MOMO for an after dinner cocktail, which also is a popular and trendy place with a nice cocktail menu.
On beforehand I had got a restaurant recommendation. RED which is quite special as they only have two courses; tournados & lobster. And then surf & turf, which is both. I had made a booking three weeks before and even at that point it was full on friday night. The place is quite traditional. I would not recommend for a group of friends before going out, but is is definately worth a visit.
Besides eating delicious food, we were strolling among Amsterdams’ many cozy streets and channels. It included a little shopping too. Among other things I bought some nice underware from the Dutch brand Marlies Dekkers. And od course we also went to the Flower Market and some nice food stores.
I hope my little mini-guide to Amsterdam can serve as inspiration to you who already have planned a trip or to you who consider where to go next. If you have some great tips, then please share them with us and our readers
